What To Pack In Your Purse When Traveling

Want to know what to pack in your purse when traveling so that you’ll have everything you need for your trip right by your side? These are some essentials that you need to know about.

What To Pack In Your Purse When Traveling

Let’s face it, your purse is basically your very own portable home base for all the essentials. If you misplace it (even for a second) you have that mini heart attack I think everybody can relate to! Whether you’re wandering cobblestone streets in a tiny Italian village, sipping oat milk lattes in a tucked-away café, or navigating an airport with one hand on your luggage and the other balancing a protein bar and your dignity, your purse holds it all together. Literally.

Let’s dive into exactly what to pack in your purse when traveling, so you’re always prepared…and maybe just a little over-prepared in the best way.

This post is all about what to pack in your purse when traveling that every globetrotter should know about.

What To Pack In Your Purse When Traveling:

1. Wallet, Passport, ID & Heath Insurance

You’d be surprised how often these basic essentials get shoved into a coat pocket or a carry-on, never to be thought of again until the moment you need them most.

Carry only what you need in your wallet…ID, a credit card, a bit of local currency, and health insurance info. If your regular wallet is on the larger side, it may be worth investing in a smaller/thinner one for travel to save valuable purse space.

Even if you’re just wandering a border town or are going on a domestic flight, having your passport tucked safely into a travel wallet is always a smart move.

Consider a zippered pouch or RFID-blocking wallet that keeps these sacred items safe and easy to access. Think about maybe taking a photo of your passport, ID and health insurance docs. Email them to yourself, just in case (God forbid) you misplace something along your way.

2. Snacks That Won’t Melt or Crumble

You’re not yourself when you’re hangry. And let’s be real, airport food can be sketchy, and that charming bistro in the countryside might not open until 2 PM. This also gives you options if you have food allergies and can’t find anything to eat.

Consider packing some bars (dairy-free and gluten-free if that’s your thing), nuts and dried fruit, and some travel size green juice powder or electrolyte packets for a quick boost.

The only thing worse than being lost is being lost AND hungry!

Side note: pack some gum, not food…but it’s something to do, a good way to freshen up, and it often helps if your ears are affected when the plane takes off and lands.

3. Mini First Aid & Health Kit

Your body is your travel buddy, and when it’s unhappy, the trip can get complicated fast. Be the person who has the Band-Aid, not the one who needs it.

Keep a small pouch stocked with pain meds, motion sickness patches or ginger chews, digestive enzymes, allergy meds, band-aids, and hand sanitizer.

This stuff may feel like a waste of space if you don’t end up needing/using it…but you’ll be glad you have it if you do. And if a fellow traveller (one you’re traveling with or one you meet along the way) ends up needing something, feeling like the hero is never a bad thing!

4. Your “Quaint Town” Survival Kit

As someone who lives for charming small towns, know that shops might close randomly, ATMs may be non-existent or miles away, and no one sells phone chargers.

Don’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle (collapsible ones save space and are easy to shove in your purse taking up next to no room). Ones with hooks are handy because you can hook them to the outside of your purse when you fill them up.

Some other things not to forget are tissues or a mini pack of toilet paper (just trust me!), lip balm and travel-size hand lotion, a portable phone charger…because maps, photos, and “where’s the café again?” apps matter, and a reusable shopping bag (for impromptu farmer’s markets and souvenir shops). These fold up super small and come in really handy any time you end up having extra things to carry.

You never know when you’ll stumble across a roadside stand selling the best homemade jam of your life!

5. Beauty On the Go (keep it minimal)

Just remember that you’re not heading to a Fashion Show…you’re exploring! But a few touch-up tools can keep you feeling fresh, especially after long drives or flights.

Toss in some tinted lip gloss for quick glow-ups, a compact mirror, travel-sized face mist, blotting papers or powder, hair ties, and a mini brush…because humidity and wind can be a real pain in the butt sometimes!

6. Entertainment for the Gaps

Even travellers and explorers have downtime…planes, trains, café solo moments, or waiting for your travel buddy who “just needs 10 more minutes.”

Keep a small notebook and pen handy for journaling, sketching, or jotting quirky things you overhear. You’ll love looking back on it when you reflect on your travels in the future.

Consider carrying an E-reader or a mini book…something uplifting, hilarious, and/or motivational would be my pick. And make sure to download a few podcasts or audiobooks for those no Wi-Fi zones!

7. Safety & Peace of Mind Tools

Traveling solo or in small towns means trusting your instincts…but being prepared never hurts.

Consider adding a whistle or personal safety alarm to your purse. Bringing a portable travel door lock (if you’re headed somewhere super remote) is also something to think about.

It’s also worth writing out your itinerary and emergency contacts out on a piece of paper and shoving it in your purse…old-school style, just in case.

A small flashlight or keychain light might come in handy as well.

8. Tech That Doesn’t Take Over

Let’s face it, tech is essential these days, but you want to experience your trip…not just document it.

Make sure to bring your phone and a compact tripod or phone stand (for that perfect cobblestone selfie), an offline pre-downloaded map app, earbuds/airpods (if they’re noise-cancelling…even better).

Take photos and capture experiences, but remember to look up and actually enjoy and be present in every moment…because it’s one you’ll never get back!

9. Your Favourite Scarf

Hear me out…it’s more useful than you might think and it folds up really nice. It’s a blanket on a chilly plane, a shawl in an unexpectedly modest destination, a pillow in a pinch, and a stylish pop of color in your travel pics!

Final Packing Tips for Your Purse

Choose the Right Purse…Go for crossbody or backpack style with zippered pockets and anti-theft features. Sometime stylish and functional that will survive travel wear.

Use small pouches or cases to divide your items…snacks in one, health kit in another, etc. You’ll thank yourself when you’re not digging for a lip balm like it’s buried treasure.

Refresh your purse before bed…like a daily reset. Toss out any wrappers or garbage taking up unnecessary space and adding clutter, refill snacks, and charge your devices. It’s a 5-minute routine that keeps travel stress at bay.

Finally, make room for a few extra oddball items that bring YOU joy and maybe a touch of comfort and home…think a tea bag of your favorite calming tea or a laminated family photo.

So pack that purse and head out on your next adventure with confidence. Whether you’re sipping cider in a little village in England or wandering a vineyard in Tuscany, you’ve got everything you need right on your shoulder.

This post was all about what to pack in your purse when traveling to help you be as prepared as possible when you set out on your next getaway.
